S45C Alloy & Carbon Round Bar
JIS S45C · AISI 1045 · DIN C45 (1.0503)
S45C is a JIS G4051 medium-carbon structural steel that has been a foundational engineering material for over a century. With 0.45% carbon, it sits in the optimal zone for a balance of strength, toughness, and machinability — hard enough to be surface-hardened for wear applications, yet tough enough for structural and dynamic loads without the complexity of alloyed grades.

Material Properties
In the normalized condition, S45C has a tensile strength of approximately 570–700 MPa with good ductility. Upon quenching and tempering, tensile strength rises to 700–900 MPa. Machinability is good in the normalized or annealed condition — among the best of any engineering steel category. The steel welds adequately with proper preheating (≥100°C for sections >25 mm) and can be induction hardened at the surface to 55–60 HRC for wear resistance in bearing journals, cams, and similar surfaces.
The steel is directly equivalent to AISI 1045 and DIN C45, giving it global recognition and ensuring full interchangeability in designs specified to any of these standards. It is arguably the most common non-alloy machinery steel in production across Indonesia's manufacturing sector.
S45C round bar is supplied in the hot-rolled or normalized condition. For applications requiring precise mechanical properties, it can be quenched and tempered to approximately 25–30 HRC or surface-hardened by induction to 55–60 HRC at the surface while retaining a tough core.
