S50C Carbon & Structural Plate
JIS S50C · AISI 1050 · DIN C50 (1.0540)
S50C is a JIS G4051 medium-high carbon steel, closely related to S45C but with a slightly higher carbon content (0.50% C) that shifts the balance further toward hardness and wear resistance. It is equivalent to AISI 1050 and DIN C50, and is widely used in plate form for machine beds, equipment bases, wear-resistant structural components, and flat tooling applications.

Material Properties
In the normalized condition, S50C has a tensile strength of approximately 640–780 MPa, somewhat higher than S45C. In the annealed condition (≤197 HB), machinability with carbide tooling is excellent. The steel can be case-hardened by surface hardening to 55–60 HRC to create hard-wearing surfaces on softer plate substrates. Weldability is fair — preheating to 200–300°C is recommended for sections above 15 mm to reduce the risk of hardening zone cracking.
The higher carbon content versus S45C delivers greater hardness in both the as-rolled and heat-treated conditions, making S50C a practical choice where S45C would be marginal but a full alloy grade would be overspecified. It maintains good machinability in the normalized or annealed condition, and can be flame or induction hardened on working surfaces when localized wear resistance is required.
